There are three different procedures at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering for the recognition of academic achievements already made. The recognition procedures are based on the general conditions of the work performed.

Recognition of academic achievements

  • Change of study programme

There are three different starting points for a change of subject, each of which is associated with different conditions.

    Before matriculation

Starting position 1: Change of subject from mechanical engineering, production and logistics and mechatronics

    1. You fill out the application form for the compartment change (also available from the service centre).
    2. In the case of a change of subject from these three subjects, a placement in the subject semester by the examination board is a prerequisite for enrolment.
    3. You will be asked to produce a recommendation on your choice from the selection board. The classification must be entered on the same form.
    4. The examination board will classify you into the corresponding subject and counting semester on the basis of the documents you provide (grade sheet, module overview or similar).
    5. You submit the completed application form, together with the other application documents, signed by you and the Examination Committee, to the Admissions Office.
    6. You will be enrolled in the recommended semester.

Initial situation 2: Change of subject from another course of study at Leibniz University

    1. You fill out the application form for the compartment change (also available from the service centre).
    2. If you change your field of study, you will be enrolled in the first semester from the new course of study, since you are starting a new course of study for this subject.
    3. However, you have the option of enrolling in a higher semester if you have already passed the relevant examinations.
    4. You will be asked to produce a recommendation on your choice from the selection board. The classification must be entered on the same form.
    5. The examination board will classify you into the corresponding subject and counting semester on the basis of the documents you provide (grade sheet, module overview or similar).
    6. You submit the completed application form, together with the other application documents, signed by you and the Examination Committee, to the Admissions Office.
    7. You will be enrolled in the recommended semester.

Starting position 3: Change of subject and study location

    1. If you change your field of study and change your study location at the same time, you must first have a placement recommendation made.
    2. To do this, you fill out the application form for grading and submit it together with the relevant documents (grade sheet, module overview or similar) to the Faculty Examination Board.
    3. This examines the formalities and classifies you into a subject semester.
    4. You submit the placement application together with the other application documents to the Admissions Office and are enrolled in the recommended semester.

    Hint:

Please note that enrolment in a particular semester does not mean that you only have to complete credits from the following semesters. Your examination results must first be recognised before they can be credited to you as credits for the new degree programme.

    After matriculation

    1. After enrolment, you should have your examination results recognised. To do this, use the application for recognition which you will receive from the examination board or online.
    2. Here you enter your personal data and the courses you wish to have recognised.
    3. The Examination Committee then forwards the application for recognition to the Examination Office, which records your performance.

Supplements to the procedure for the recognition of academic achievements:

    • If the course is identical, the performance can be taken over directly at the examination office. A match exists if a course of your old degree programme is identical to a course of your new degree programme.
    • If you would like to have another course recognised, then after the formal examination by the board of examiners, a direct recognition of your examination performance by the corresponding subject examiner is necessary.
      • To do this, please use the form to go to the respective expert examiner.
      • The latter is to compare your examination performance within the meaning of the Lisbon Convention with the required standards of his own event. As a rule, a short interview is held for this purpose. It is usually helpful if the subject examiner can get an overview of the respective subject on the basis of your documents (notes, scripts, etc.).
      • Please arrange an appointment with the appropriate contact person in good time.
      • You submit the application signed by the subject examiners to the examination board again.
  • Change of Study Location

If you change your place of study in order to continue your studies at LUH in the same subject, please note the following:

    Before enrolment: information and application

    1. You can obtain information about your planned change of university from the ServiceCenter or from the student advisory service.
    2. You apply to the Admissions Office with the usual documents for a place in the desired degree programme.
    3. They are enrolled by the Admissions Office in the corresponding semester. If you change your place of study in the same program, your number of semesters is simply updated. The counting semester is initially set to one pro forma to enable you to achieve the required number of points.

    After enrolment: recognition

    1. You submit an application to the examination board for the recognition of academic achievements. In the paper or online form you enter the credits you wish to have recognised. To do this, you select in advance which academic achievement at the new university can be replaced by the one you have already earned. You make your selection with the help of the course and module catalogues and the corresponding course content. The courses do not have to be one hundred percent identical, but should have similar focuses.
    2. You submit the signed application together with the relevant documents (overview of grades from the old university, course and module descriptions or old lecture notes or similar) to the examination board.
    3. After the board of examiners has checked the correctness, you will have the subjects to be credited recognised by the subject examiner on the same form.
    4. Present the application for recognition to the subject examiner, together with the relevant documents proving the competences acquired in the subject. The documents should be in German or English.
    5. Please return the completed form together with a current grade sheet to the board of examiners, who will sign it and forward it to the examination office.
    6. The Examination Office will inform you about the credited services. Your counting semester will be adjusted according to the recognised achievements and the available ECTS credits.

    Important notes

    1. Make appointments with the respective examiner in good time. Please refer to the course and module catalogue for the relevant contact details.
    2. The respective examination regulations specify how many credit points from another course of study can be credited. As a rule, a maximum of 60 ECTS credits can be credited in a Bachelor's programme and 30 ECTS credits in a Master's programme.
    3. Please note that the recognition of your academic achievements is your sole responsibility. Please inform yourself at the examination board in time.
    4. Recognition of the recognised achievements takes place in the semester in which you submit the completed application for recognition to the examination board.
    5. In the event of a refusal, you can appeal. The burden of proof lies with the refusing instance (expert examiner).
    6. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering recognises achievements according to the Lisbon Convention. The principle of the essential difference applies. You can find more detailed information on this in the information sheet on the Lisbon Convention.

Recommendation: Make an effort to get recognition for your achievements in the first semester.

  • Study/examination achievements abroad

In order to make your stay abroad during your studies worthwhile, you should inform yourself sufficiently before your stay about the possibilities of later recognition of the study achievements achieved during your stay.

    Before the stay abroad

    1. You are planning your study stay abroad.
    2. They can obtain advice from the examination board, the study abroad advisory service or the exchange coordinator of an institute.
    3. They apply for an exchange program through the respective institute. Please inform yourself in time about the application deadlines, which may differ from institute to institute.
    4. Then fill out the application for the Learning Agreement. On this application, you enter all the courses that you want to take abroad. In the second column of the form, enter the business event at the LUH for which you want to have the work done recognized later. To do this, you use the module descriptions of LUH and the foreign partner university.
    5. You have the application for the Learning Agreement formally checked by the examination board.
    6. After the examination board has confirmed that formal recognition is possible, you should contact the person responsible for the module in question. Please arrange an appointment with the module coordinator in advance and in good time.
    7. The person responsible for the module confirms by signature that he or she approves the completion of the examination abroad as well as the subsequent recognition of the work performed. Depending on the area in which the module is to be recognised at LUH, different contact persons are responsible. For a direct equivalent in the elective/elective area, recognition by the respective lecturer of the module of the faculty is necessary. For recognition as a non-specific elective module in one of the specialisation areas (without a direct equivalent), the person responsible for the specialisation area checks the recognition in each case. For the specialisation areas in Mechanical Engineering, these are Prof. Kabelac (Energy and Process Engineering), Prof. Lachmayer (Development and Construction) and Prof. Maier (Production Engineering). In Production and Logistics, Prof. Nyhuis is responsible for the specialisation areas. Recognition in the General/Tutorial/Additional Subject programme can be realised directly by the examination board.
    8. You must sign and submit the form in full to the exchange coordinator of the faculty as well as the Learning Agreement that you have completed in advance.
    9. The Learning Agreement guarantees you the later recognition of the exams you have taken for the courses you have chosen. It is only valid with the signature of the chairman of the examination board.

    During the stay

    1. At the partner university you present the Learning Agreement to the responsible office and have your choice of course confirmed. If necessary, you may also have to submit a Transcript of Records. The partner university will inform you about the respective modalities during the application procedure.
    2. Should there be any changes to your chosen courses during your stay, please inform the examination board as soon as possible, who will discuss the recognition with the relevant subject examiner. This consultation is essential to ensure that the changed course is recognised.

    After the stay

    1. After the stay they resubmit the Learning Agreement together with the Transcript of Records to the board of examiners. The board of examiners recognises all previously agreed services noted on the Learning Agreement.
    2. The Examination Committee forwards the application to the Examination Office, which records your performance accordingly.

    Important notes

    • Take care of the preparation of your Learning Agreement yourself before your stay. Plan enough time for this and make appointments with the respective subject examiners in good time.
    • All courses confirmed on the Learning Agreement will be recognised if their correctness is confirmed by the examination board before the stay abroad.
    • Only the signature of the exchange coordinator is valid. The staff of the institutes can advise you on the selection of courses, but a signature on the Learning Agreement is not required.
    • In case of a change in your study plan abroad (e.g. due to changes in the offer at the partner university), it is advisable to contact the examination board at an early stage and have the change confirmed in writing. In this way you can be sure that the changed examination performance will still be recognised.
    • The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering recognises under the Lisbon Convention. The acquired competences and the content should match 70%; the acquired credit points should not differ by more than 25%.
